Endicott Police Department, NY, utilizes Crime-lite AUTO in Major Forensic Technology Upgrade
The Endicott Police Department is significantly enhancing its investigative and crime prevention capabilities thanks to a $770,000 grant from New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s Law Enforcement Technology (LETECH) fund, as part of a wider $127 million investment to provide new technology and equipment to 378 police departments and sheriffs’ offices outside of New York City.
While the Endicott grant funds a range of important upgrades, a key focus is on advanced forensic technology, with a Crime-lite AUTO device set to enhance the CSI capabilities of the department.
This multispectral illumination device represents a major leap forward in evidence collection and analysis, with it’s versatility allowing investigators to identify a wide range of crucial evidence at crime scenes, including body fluids, fingerprints, gunshot residue, and microscopic traces like glass, fibres, and hair.
Detective Crystal Kim highlighted the device’s efficiency, explaining that the Crime-lite AUTO can perform the work of multiple traditional forensic tools simultaneously, significantly speeding up the evidence processing workflow by capturing detailed images.
This rapid analysis can be crucial in quickly developing leads and solving cases. Furthermore, the capabilities of the Crime-lite AUTO extend to detecting injuries not immediately visible to the naked eye, such as bruises on assault victims, providing critical evidence in sensitive cases. This investment in the latest forensic technology underscores the commitment of the department to thorough and efficient investigations.
The acquisition of the Crime-lite AUTO forms part of a wider investment, with the department also implementing a gunfire detection system, new pole cameras in Endicott’s downtown area, and new in-vehicle dashboard cameras equipped with built-in license plate readers.
Chief Patrick Garey emphhasized that while Endicott doesn’t experience high levels of violent crime between strangers, these technological advancements will significantly enhance the department’s ability to proactively address potential issues, conduct thorough investigations, and ultimately ensure public safety, with the enhanced investigative tools and increased surveillance technology providing residents with a greater sense of security.
